Shoplifting Call Gone Wrong

Posted On: June 6, 2017

Last night at about 7 pm, Officers were dispatched to Target located at 10621 Carmenita Rd. in the City of Santa Fe Springs, regarding a shoplifting call gone wrong. A female adult was detained by loss prevention for stealing multiple items. While in custody, her boyfriend approaches the loss prevention agents and begins to assault them. During the assault, the female suspect breaks free and both she and the male flee the store and attempt to escape in their stolen car parked just outside.  However, by this time our officers were already on scene and after the suspects see the arriving officers, they bail out of the stolen car and try to escape on foot. The male half is immediately taken into custody and the female half is arrested a short time later after trying to elude police containment.  Arrested was 25-year-old Michelle Amanda Cortez of Whittier and 27-year-old Armin Demetrio Ortega of Whittier. Both were booked and charged with robbery and grand theft auto. Cortez's bail has been set at $50,000 and Ortega has a "No Bail" status due to a probation violation. They are expected to be arraigned in Bellflower Court Wednesday morning. #whittierpd
