Whittier is a progressive city of approximately 85,000 residents, located 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The City is known for its quality city management and its sound fiscal practices.
The Whittier Police Department provides a variety of law enforcement services to the citizens of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. The Department is comprised of the Patrol, Investigation, Support Services and Administration Divisions. The Police Department features a great team comprised of 128 sworn police officers and 54 civilian staff. The City Council and community strongly support the outstanding men and women of the Whittier Police Department. The Whittier Police Department has developed a highly successful Community Based Policing Program. A cornerstone of this model program is a partnership between the Police Department, city residents and businesses to produce a high quality of life for all citizens.
The Department is headed by Chief Aviv Bar. The management and supervisory team is comprised of two captains, six lieutenants and fourteen sergeants.
The Whittier Police Station has been in service since 1955, when the Department had 20 police officers. Since then, many expansions took place to accommodate the growth of the City and the Department. In 2007, the Whittier City Council approved a $35 Million project to construct a new, state-of-the-art police headquarters. The new station opened on October 26, 2010 and resides on the west side of City Hall at 13200 Penn Street.
