Whittier Reads 2019 Event: L.A.'s Forgotten French Connection

Hear about one of the more colorful characters in the history of 19th century Los Angeles-Miguel Leonis, an immigrant of French Basque descent.  Illiterate but ruthless and very shrewd, Leonis acquired vast landholdings in the San Fernando valley and what is now downtown Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Elizabeth lake. In 1962, the Leonis home became a museum, the first historical building in the area to be designated as a Los Angeles City Cultural Landmark.  Historian Dinna Pitt, curator at the Miguel Leonis Adobe Museum, will make the presentation.

Free tickets available at both libraries.
