Whittier, CA
Home MenuProtecting Whittier’s Quality of Life and Public Safety Services
Whittier is a community rich with traditions, history, and strong sense of heritage that honors its diversity and protects and preserves landmark structures that are unique to our city. The City maintains a high quality of life for local residents through robust public services that help residents succeed and thrive. Whittier also offers enrichment opportunities for youth and teens, responsive public works crews, and local police who work tirelessly to keep Whittier safe.
Whittier has a track record of being fiscally responsible while successfully providing city services that our residents need. However, since the recession in 2008, the City has received less revenue including $8 million in cuts when the State eliminated redevelopment funding in 2012. The City is facing a projected cumulative budget deficit of nearly $19 million over the next 5 years, potentially requiring cuts to the police force, City services, and the frequency of road maintenance.
Local Funding to Keep Whittier Safe, Clean, and Well-Maintained
To provide stable, local funding to meet these needs, the Whittier City Council is considering placing a three-quarter cent Neighborhood Safety and Community Service transaction and use tax, commonly known as a sales tax, on the March 3, 2020 ballot.
If approved by voters, this locally-controlled funding could:
Hire and retain police officers to reduce crime, gang, drug, and graffiti activity on our streets
Address homelessness in our community
Prevent cuts to senior, youth, and after school programs
Maintain streets and sidewalks and keep parks and other public areas clean and safe
Provide quick responses to 9-1-1 emergencies
Support local businesses |
Fiscal Accountability and Transparency
- All funds from the measure will be used solely to fund City services here in Whittier.
- Funds will be controlled by the City and cannot be taken away by the State or the County.
- Independent audits would guarantee all funds are spent in accordance with law.
- This measure would not be applied to the sale of most groceries or prescription medicine.
