Character Defining Features

  • CraftsmanOne to two stories;
  • Irregular plan;
  • Low-pitched hipped or gabled roofs. Roof lines may be complex. Cross gabled and multi-front gable roofs are also common;
  • Vented opening below the gable peak;
  • Wide eaves;
  • Knee braces, exposed rafter tails and beams. Detailed rafter ends are not uncommon;
  • Tapered, square or double columns which support the porch roof are typically short and rest upon large stone or brick piers that extend to the ground level;
  • CraftsmanCovered porch;
  • Building materials include varying combinations of wood, stone, brick and shingles;
  • Roof dormers are common. These dormers are often shed, gabled or hipped;
  • Fireplaces consist of brick or stone;
  • Wood windows, double-hung, multiple lights over single pane. Multiple windows appear together in banks. Casement windows are also seen;
  • Shingle, lap siding, and simple (drop) siding is common; and,
  • Solid wood or wood and glass doors at the primary entrance are common.
