When restoring and/or rehabilitating a historic landmark or vintage building in Whittier, it is important to be able to correctly identify its architectural style and associated character-defining features. This is because when city staff and the Historic Resources Commission review any request for modifications or additions to a historic landmark or vintage building, the following are taken into consideration:

  • Preservation of the architectural integrity of the building to ensure that its important character-defining features are preserved and not compromised;
  • That all proposed restoration and rehabilitation work to the building is consistent/compatible with its original architectural style;
  • That rehabilitation and restoration work to a contributing resource within a historic district does not degrade the integrity of the overall district; and,
  • Compliance with the U.S. Secretary of Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring and Reconstructing Historic Buildings.

Prior to drawing plans or making any alternations to a historic landmark or vintage building (constructed prior to 1941) in the City of Whittier, property owners are strongly encouraged to contact the Community Development Department at (562) 567-9320 for help and guidance.
