The Whittier Police Department Mentoring Service is very unique. It is one of the only services of its kind in Los Angeles County.
WPD values each and every employee and is highly committed to their personal and professional development. We understand transitioning to the world of public safety can be awkward and challenging. Mentors are highly trained, veteran employees who are formally assigned to newly hired police personnel (Protégés). Each Mentor welcomes and befriends their Protégé. Mentors are committed to achieving the following mission:
- We exist to develop and contribute to the success of others.
We provide a welcoming and learner-centered environment so that all people genuinely feel valued and experience opportunities of personal and professional satisfaction.
This investment will shape future leaders. As Mentors, we know the following is true:
- Average leaders attract followers. Great mentoring leaders attract and develop other mentors and leaders.
The relationship built between the Mentor and the Protégé is one that is based on learning, mutual respect, and trust. The Mentor/Protégé relationship is designed to promote positive growth for the employee as well as the future of our Department. The WPD Mentoring Service is a vital component to the recruitment and retention of our employees.
