Welcome to the Whittier Police Department Jail

The Whittier Police Department maintains a privately operated Type I jail facility. It is staffed by jailers from G4S Secure Solutions. The entire jail operation is overseen by the Administrative Lieutenant who reports directly to the Chief of Police. The jail facility provides enough bed space to accommodate 9 females and 22 males. All inmates are pre-trial arrestees who have been arrested for misdemeanors and felonies. The Department does provide a trustee program for those inmates sentenced by the court and mandated to “work off” their time. We do not provide a “pay-to-stay” overnight program. Because we are a Type I jail facility we are only authorized to hold inmates a maximum of 96 hours, precluding any emergencies.

Whittier City Jail maintains of compliment of 9 jailers. Most are bilingual and each shift has at least one female jailer present. All jailers provided by G4S Secure Solutions have completed a California Standard and Corrections STC certified Corrections Officer Academy. Additionally, they receive continued training of at least 24 hours every two years. The Jail Supervisor has also completed the California Board of Corrections STC certified supervisory training.

The mission of the Whittier City Jail is to maintain the safety, security and well-being of our community and the inmates in our custody. Our professional staff performs a series of duties that are critical and essential for ensuring successful law enforcement operations in our community. They complete the booking of each inmate that arrives. They search, photograph, and fingerprint the inmates. Moreover, jail staff ensures the health and well-being of the inmates through a series of medical questions and continued observation. Inmates are informed of their ability to contact family, employers, and legal counsel, and assist the families with information about those we hold in custody as well as visitation. Additionally, they serve three meals daily, which are strictly regulated by the state and county for its caloric and nutritional content. Each inmate is afforded access to showers, basic hygiene articles and reading material. Lastly, jailers are responsible for the transportation of all inmates to the appropriate courts and when necessary process bail and bonds.

The jail operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is responsible for the processing of all prisoners. This includes and is not limited to booking, fingerprinting, photographing, feeding, issuing clothing and personal items and physically monitoring the prisoner while they are in our facility.

Jail personnel use a sophisticated finger-printing identification system called LiveScan. The Live Scan Fingerprint System is an automated system that provides an effective way of capturing a person's fingerprints, without the use of ink. Designed for law enforcement agencies that require fingerprint systems for identification, the LiveScan unit offers several advantages over the traditional ink method.

The Live Scan unit enables subjects' fingerprints to be transmitted by phone lines to the California Department of Justice in Sacramento. This capability provides timely identification of individuals, while they are still in custody.
