The Whittier Police Department is accepting applications to issue a License to Carry a Concealed Weapon for Whittier and Santa Fe Springs residents only.
If your initial License to Carry a Concealed Weapon was issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, you must submit all renewal applications with them.
All listed weapons on the CCW application must be registered to the applicant at the time of submittal.
Please be aware that information disclosed on the application for a License to Carry a Concealed Weapon may be subject to public release and disclosure.
The application process is as follows:
- Submit an application through the online CCW portal at (Please read this entire page before proceeding):
- Initial review for further processing
- Criminal history check through LiveScan fingerprinting (Click to print)
- Three signed letters of character reference (must have reference’s name, phone number, and current address)
- Interview with a background investigator and review of all required documents
- Thorough background check
- Psychological Review
- Completion of an approved CCW firearm safety course, mental health course, weapon(s) inspection, and shooting qualification *No online firearm courses will be accepted.*
- Final review and issuance of CCW license

*** DO NOT schedule a livescan fingerprinting, firearms training, or psychological examination until instructed to do so by Whittier Police Department personnel ***
Firearms Training Info
Applicants must successfully complete a firearms training course, per Penal Code 26165. After a thorough background investigation, the applicant will be contacted by the CCW Coordinator to proceed with firearms training from an approved training provider.
New applicants must complete a training course lasting a minimum of 16 hours.
Renewal applicants must complete a training course lasting at least 8 hours.
The course shall include instruction on firearm safety, mental health course, firearm handling, shooting technique, and laws regarding the permissible use of a firearm.
All firearms shall be inspected by the training provider to ensure that they are safe, operable, and in compliance with CA state and federal regulations.
Only two firearms are authorized on the CCW.
Applicants must complete and pass a live fire course with each firearm to be listed on the license. When the applicant has completed their firearm training course, upload a copy of the completed and signed Whittier Police Department's shooting proficiency form.
Handgun Requirements
Any handgun that the applicant intends to carry and has listed on their CCW license shall meet the bellow criteria prior to being used during their required firearms training. Failure to follow the criteria or failure to adhere to CA state and federal regulations will result in the immediate suspension and/or revocation of the license.
The handgun must be registered/DROS to the applicant.
- The handgun must be concealable upon the person or reasonably sized bag or purse.
- The handgun, magazines, and ammunition must be in compliance with applicable CA state and federal laws.
- “AR Pistols” and similar handguns are not permitted.
