Home MenuTraffic Bureau
The Whittier Police Department's Traffic Bureau investigates all traffic collisions that occur in the City of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. After an initial report is taken at the scene by patrol officers, it is forwarded to the traffic bureau for further investigation. The traffic bureau finalizes the determination of fault and if necessary, issues a citation for the traffic violation.
The traffic bureau responds to all fatal traffic collision. They assist the patrol officers at the scene of the collision and continue the investigation away from the scene. Investigating a fatal collision is rather lengthy. The area of the collision must be preserved until the field investigation is complete. This may mean a street closure of several hours.
The traffic bureau along with patrol officers identify problem spots in the city where collisions take place. Heavier traffic enforcement may be implemented by the traffic bureau to reduce the number of accidents and injuries to motorists at these problem spots.
From collecting evidence and following leads, to arrest and filing of charges, all hit and run traffic collisions are handled by the traffic bureau. Remember, the law requires you to stop if you are involved in a collision. The Traffic bureau is also responsible for the scheduling and deployment of DUI and driver license checkpoints.
The department's parking enforcement unit is part of the Traffic Bureau. Parking Enforcement Officers enforce city parking codes including street sweeping violations, extended parking and abandoned vehicles.
