Inmate Trusty Program - Inmate workingThe Whittier Police Department provides an Inmate Trusty Program to those individuals who have been convicted of a crime and must "work off" their time as ordered by the court. The following criteria must be met:

Court paperwork must specifically authorize the individual to work in the Whittier City Jail. We are not a "Pay-to-Stay" program and do not "house" those who are required to turn themselves into a local city jail. We do not keep inmates overnight. Trusty applicants are responsible for understanding the terms of their sentence.

  1. The controlling offense cannot involve drugs, violence, or sex crimes.
  2. The trusty applicant cannot have any convictions for drugs, violence, sex crimes or prior felonies.
  3. The trusty applicant must have a valid photo ID.
  4. The trusty must show certification within 60 days that they have taken a TB test and shown to be negative.
  5. The trusty must arrange to have a preliminary background conducted by the trusty coordinator before authorization can be granted.

police SUVOnce the individual has been approved to work as a trusty in the Whittier City Jail the following procedures will be initiated.

  1. The trusty will be expected to work either 7am-3pm or 3pm-11pm. Only one 8-hour shift per day is allowed. The program is offered 365 days a year.
  2. For each 8-hour shift worked the trusty will pay $80.
  3. For each 8-hour period worked the trusty will receive either 8-hours credit or one day time served.
  4. The trusty will be given the opportunity to schedule dates and times with the trusty coordinator ahead of time to work with their family or work schedules.
  5. A letter will be sent to the court where the case is held indicating the individual has been enrolled in a trusty worker program.
  6. Upon completion of the program a letter will be sent to the handling court indicating the individual has completed the required hours or days.

If at any time a trusty fails to appear on their scheduled work day or fails to show up on time, violates any rules, does not pay the daily trusty fee, or otherwise fails the program, a letter will be sent to the court indicating the trusty has not completed the court ordered sentence with the Whittier City Jail. Trusties will not be allowed to re-enroll in the program once they have been disqualified. For further details regarding the program please view the manual. Applicants are encouraged to not wait to sign up for the program at the last minute as it is managed on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
